New Books for May Day
Last night we went to the local book brothel and spent a few happy hours resisting the urge to double the size of our collection. In the end, we made it out relatively unscathed: only three books, and all off the clearance shelves. What sixteen bucks will buy you on a geekdate:
Return to Treasure Island and the Search for Captain Kidd by Barry Clifford and Paul Perry. Books like these can be great or they can be awful, but if it has to do with pirates they’ll usually get at least a rudimentary flip-through. This one looks promising.
Love Medicine by Louise Erdrich. I enjoyed and was fascinated by Erdrich’s Last Report on the Miracles at Little No Horse. This book looks to be in a slightly different vein, although still surrounding American Indian characters, and I think it’s going to be very good.
Old School by Tobias Wolff. I disliked and was bored by Wolff’s This Boy’s Life. It was the cover of this book that pulled me in, and once I realized it was about a boarding school I knew I had to give it a shot. I’m fascinated with boarding schools…
Of course, this just means that my “to read” stack is that much higher, but that’s such an awesome problem to have! 🙂
